• Passports: To enter Ethiopia, a passport valid for six months is required by all nationals referred to in the chart above.
  • Visas: Visas for Ethiopia are required by all nationals referred to in the chart above, except transit passengers continuing to a third country within 12 hours - providing they do not leave the airport, and hold valid travel documents for onward destination. Some tourist visas for the following can be issued on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole
  • International Airport: (a) foreign nationals coming from countries where there is no Ethiopian mission
    (b) foreign nationals coming from, and who are permanent residents in, any of the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA (1).
    If applying for a tourist visa on arrival, visitors will require two passport photographs and US$20; application can take up to two hours.
    Note: Nationals not referred to in the chart are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements for Ethiopia.
  • Types and cost:
    Tourist: £14 (single-entry, one month); £22 (multiple-entry, three months); £30 (multiple-entry, six months).
    Business: £14 (single-entry, one month); £22 (multiple-entry, three months); £36 (multiple-entry, six months).
    Transit: £14 (single-entry); £22 (double-entry).
    Note: Tourist visas for nationals from the USA differ from the rest of the nationals in the chart above.
    US citizens pay £51 (US$31) for a two-year multiple-entry visa for both business and tourist visits; £29 (US$18) for a single- or double-entry transit visa and £29 (US$18) for a two-year student visa.
  • Validity:
    Single-entry visas (tourist and business) are valid for 30 days; multiple-entry visas (tourist and business) are valid for three or six months.
    Applications for extensions should be made to the Immigration Department in Ethiopia.
    Note: Visas are valid from the date of issue, not from the date of entry; visas cannot be post-dated.

  • Working days:
    Visas for Ethiopia take around two to three working days to process, but longer if the application is by post.
    Applications by journalists and photographers may take up to two weeks.
